Chapter Five

“This was crazy.” Neil snuggled beside her in the back of the car. “Being in the woods with me was a total leap of faith on your part. Hell, meeting me for our first date took balls. I’m glad you gave me a chance.”

“I can take care of myself.” She snorted. “I don’t like to use magic to solve my problems, but I know all the right spells needed to protect myself. You could’ve been turned into stone if you’d tried something stupid. I could still do that, if I wanted to.”

“And this is why I like you. You don’t hold back.” He kissed the side of her head, then tipped her chin. “Please tell me you’ll come with me to the wedding. I’d love to show you off.”

“Yeah, because your family will be thrilled to find out their baby boy is shacking up with a witch.” Shit. She didn’t want to put up walls between them, but her damned confidence sucked assholes. Combine the low self-esteem with the regret filling her mind and nothing could go the way she wanted.

“Who cares what they say? I’m happy. I haven’t been happy in a long time. I mean it. I think I’m in love with you.”

Her heart squeezed and her glow dimmed. The spells. Everything came down to her spells. He’d said the magic words and she’d touched the candle. He claimed to love her, but she’d prayed to the Goddess. All of his emotions had to be because of the spell or another supernatural reason. She blinked back tears. Part of her wanted to tell him the truth. The rest of her wanted to ride out the affair and see what happened.

“What’s wrong, Havan?” He brushed her hair from her face and snuggled beside her. “I know. Love in two days is crazy, but I swear your magic has bewitched me. I can’t see my life without you.”

“It’s the candle and the initial spell. Hell, it’s all of my spells.” She blurted out the words, but didn’t regret what she’d done. “The candle you bought was a love candle. You burn it, say the chant and your love will come to you. That’s why you’re in love with me. I want this to be true but I know in my heart the spell took over. I didn’t think, just let the magic do whatever it wanted.”

He rose up on his elbow. “I haven’t burned anything. I put the candle on my dining room table, but it’s still in the bag.”

“Not yours—my half. I touched it and conjured your name in my mind. This isn’t because you really love me. It’s a spell and it can’t last forever. True love has to happen because both people feel the same way about each other.”

“And you don’t love me.” He sat up and nodded, then thrust his fingers into his hair. “I knew this was too good to be true. I find a woman I love, one I can’t see my future without and again fate kicks my ass and she doesn’t feel the same way about me.
